(Fred Shaw, Gypsy Photographer from the Stacey Collection archives)
Photographs by the late Fred Shaw, depicting Rudari Gypsies from the Stacey Collection Archives
The stylized image below by a Victorian artist depicts a romanticized image of a Gypsy recognized in many prints and works of literature. The photographs included on this site will give you an opportunity to view members of a Roumanian Rudari Tribe of Gypsies as they appeared in 1920's England. To learn more about Gypsies from more early scholars, photographers and educators in England, please visit the Photograph Archives held by the University of Liverpool at http://sca.lib.liv.ac.uk/collections/gypsy/photoind.htm.
An old Gypsy saying:
If foky kek jins bute, Ma sal at lende; For sore mush jins chomany That tute kek jins.
Translation:
"Whatever ignorance men may show,
From none disdainful turn;
For every one doth something know
Which you have yet to learn."
Fred Shaw was a Gypsy, Photographer and scholar. His studies and photographs during the early years of the twentieth century have left a grand record of Gypsies in Great Britain.
