Molly came to us by way of our local SPCA. She was so small when we adopted her we thought she might be about three months old. It turned out she was about six months old. The reason she was turned into the shelter was because she got car sick. Which she did, but with time, patience and lots of practice she got over it and now rides the eight hours to my sister in laws house comfortably. I urge anyone thinking of getting a pet to seriously consider the commitment you are making. You wouldn't give a child away because she/he got motion sick! But, on the other hand I'm certainly glad we found her because she has become our nurse. No matter who is sick or hurt Molly is right there, carefully creeping up onto the bed to lay next to you and cheer you up.
Because Molly is such a love, we decided to try and get her certified as a therapy dog. I had given her some basic training at home, but we thought she needed a bit more. So we took her to our trainer Terri at Bedlamb Bestiary. Molly completed Advanced Basic training and on March 5, 2006 she passed both her Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and her Therapy Dog International (TDI) therapy dog certification. We plan to start visiting the Veteran's Hospital soon. There never seem to be enough dog/handler teams to respond to all the demand, so I would encourage anyone to think about therapy work with their dog. The great thing about therapy work is that any dog can do it regardless of breed or mix of breed. Any size, shape or color, all are welcome. There are all kinds of programs out there, from visiting hospitals and nursing homes to reading programs at local libraries and schools to help children learn to read.
