PEOPLE, PLACES AND THINGS

RICHMOND

Chicago Cy. Local purveyor of blues, jazz, rock and lost nuggets from America's musical heritage. I'd be his bass player.

Virginia Organization of Composers and Lyricists. VOCAL offers support and resources to songwriters, and has a monthly showcase (third Monday) at Richbrau Brewery in Shockoe Slip. Good folks, great music.

Richmond Music Journal. All the news that's fit to print about music in River City.

MYRTLE BEACH

Big Bam Boom aka Jan Vaughan. I played with him 32 years ago in Rainbow's Edge - and I still play with him. The consumate singer and entertainer, Boom works all around the Myrtle Beach area. I go down five or six times a year to sit in, and it's well worth the drive.

Doug Fankhauser. A very tasty guitarist and singer who plays in a variety of Myrtle Beach venues. Virginia roots - honed his game at Kings Dominion.

Brian Roessler. Singer-songwriting talent.

My Buddy Todd. Is that Robert Johnson...Keb' Mo'...Taj Mahal? No, it's my buddy Todd.

NATIONAL

Greg Greenway. Singer/songwriter and open tuning acoustic guitar virtuoso. Great stuff, and he grew up in Richmond too.

Lenahan. Bagpipes and Stratocasters? Yes - and it's awesome.

GEAR

BSX EUBs. I play the T-bass, made with love and care by Dino Fiumara in Pennsylvania.

Dean Pace Bass. My everyday workhorse EUB. It's good for Cole Porter or Green Day.

Birdsong Guitars. I'm saving money for a Cortobass.

Carter Pedal Steel Guitars. I play the D-10 in black mica. Bobby Black and Rusty Young play Carters - enough said!

Billy Cooper's Music. Virginia's top pedal steel shop - one of the best in the nation.

Guitar Works. A great guitar shop in Richmond. They carry Taylor, Martin, Fender and their own Guitar Works brand. I own a Guitar Works GWA-60 myself. Charlie, their luthier, can fix anything.

Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center. Simply the best. Worth a pilgrimage, and just two blocks from a Metro station.
